Description
Bentonite — the natural clay mineral having property to inflate at hydration (by 14 — 16 times). At restriction of space for free swelling in the presence of water dense gel which interferes with further penetration of moisture is formed. This property, and also not toxicity and chemical firmness does it irreplaceable in production, construction and many other fields of activity.

The natural lying bentonites usually have rn 6 — 9,5 (for 5% of water suspension after its upholding within 1 hour) and contain less than 2% of a carbonate of sodium; the general content of interchangeable sodium and calcium does not exceed 80 me/100. There are two types of bentonites:
calcic, with low extent of swelling;
sodium, with high extent of swelling (vspuchivaniye speed less than 7 ml/g or more than 12 ml/g).

Some natural lying bentonites can have the characteristics different from these values; where it takes place, usually it is considered that bentonite is activated.
Application

In the food industry it is registered as a food additive of E558 interfering caking and a komkovaniye.

Bentonite is applied to preparation of drilling mud fluid. It is applied in foundry business, when processing oil products and iron ores, in production of ceramics, to clarification of solutions.

Bentonite is biologically active agent, its addition in a forage and with fertilizers to the soil increases efficiency of animals and productivity of agricultural cultures.

Bentonite is used in hydroconstruction for fight against a filtration, to them shield channels. In the USSR more than ten large-scale deposits of bentonite clays were developed: Cherkassk area, Caucasus, Kazakhstan.

Studying and development of fields of domestic bentonite began with Crimean Kyla. Kit long time served as a standard for comparison with clays of other regions of the USSR.

The main component of bentonite is montmorillonite which after modification is used in the oil and gas, food, cosmetic, pharmacological and construction industries.

Bentonite is also applied to dressing of various type of terrariums, palyudarium, aquariums and other devices for keeping of amphibious and other representatives of water elements in house conditions.
